Supervision
Supervision is SUCH an important part of growing as a clinician. Many agencies or group practices offer on site supervision, however, it can be beneficial to have an outside source for support. I knew from the moment I learned about supervision in class that I wanted to be that support for others someday. I have had experiences with less than stellar supervisors — it wasn’t ideal. I wanted so much more than I was able to get, and sometimes that isn’t even necessarily their fault! When we want something specific, we have to find a way to get it. I am a lover of learning, and that serves my supervisees well. My job as a supervisor is to support and guide you to the clinician you’d like to be.
I have experience working with a variety of populations from as young as 3 years old to older adults; individual, family/parenting, groups, trauma (specifically I have been completing a training in Cognitive Processing Therapy), OCD, ADHD, some Play Therapy training, and so much more. I am not claiming to specialize in all of these areas, but I take it seriously when I say I like to try to meet clients where they are at, so if something comes up, I find a way to learn more about it. I also have spent time making connections with other clinicians who do specialize in these areas, and can refer you for consults if desired/needed.
I have over 5 years of experience working with minors (teenagers are my jam), which means working with their caregivers as well. I have heard many clinicians say “I don’t want to work with kids because parents.” I get it, it can be hard and it can be scary, but you CAN learn to do it and do it well with the right support. I was there once, and those growing pains are worth it. Not only is seeing children and adolescents a pretty much guarantee to keep you busy, but it also is so, so rewarding! These kids will be grown ups someday, and they are looking for someone to help them figure it out. What an amazing opportunity we have to be that person! I read a quote once that has stuck with me ever since, “Be the therapist your teenage self needed.” I can help you be that therapist.
Supervision with me is for:
people who are self starters (or willing to work toward being one)
people who like to learn
people who are willing to work between meetings to improve themselves and their knowledge
Supervision is not meant to be passive. We all have to start somewhere, but at some point you have to accept that you are in control of yourself — that includes your time and what you take in. I love to give resources to those that I am working with, so you can expect information on where to start if you are unsure. You can also expect education and support surrounding not only the topics you bring into supervision, but also the typical ones I have heard from clinicians (myself included) over the years. These topics may include, but are not limited to: assessing for and working with suicidal ideation, working with parents/caregivers, growing confidence in your expertise and abilities, and more. I use these topics and more to create an agenda for supervision sessions which allows you to count up to 8 CE credits per renewal period for attending supervision on a regular basis.
Supervision is open to both pre-licensed and licensed individuals in Illinois and Missouri. (Note: if requesting supervision while located in MO, clinician must be willing to drive to IL at least 50% of the time due to face to face supervision requirements.)
